Top Ten Adventures of 2014

2014 is now done and over with, and I thought I’d review my past year in a variety of different ways.  It gives me the opportunity to see what I enjoyed and didn’t so much enjoy about the year, along with ideas for personal and professional growth, travel adventures and much more.

I managed to make it out on numerous adventures throughout 2014 and have a few favourites I’d like to share here.

April 20, 2014 – Highway 11 and 93 (to Jasper) Alberta.
april 2014 - hwy 11 alberta
This area is a common road trip for me, and a great #microadventure for anyone looking to get out for a weekend of travel. April still has most everything frozen, but the temperatures are getting more comfortable for hiking. Watch for the bears coming out of hibernation!

May 19, 2014 – UNESCO Dinosaur Park Alberta.

May was still quite cool for camping in the mountains, but for 2015, I’m going to do it anyway. Regardless, it was a great opportunity to head South-East from Edmonton and visit the Dinosaur Park. Weather was beautiful, quite comfortable for camping and hiking.

June 1, 2014 – Crowsnest Pass Alberta
Crowsnest Pass Alberta
The area is full of interesting things to see and do – especially if you’re interested in the history of coal mining and seeing abandoned buildings and even exploring an old coal mine shaft.

June 14, 2014 – Drumheller and the Atlas Coal Mine
drumheller alberta
Keeping with the theme of coal mines, a weekend road trip to Drumheller to further explore an abandoned coal mine (Atlas Coal Mine) and the surrounding area was a welcome adventure. It was on this trip I came across GuZoo and have made it a regular stop when in this area ever since.

June 21, 2014 – Crescent Falls, Alberta
highway 11, crescent falls and nordegg alberta
Finally getting West and into the Rocky Mountains. This trip to my favorite area included seeing some bears with cubs along with a lot more wildlife. Camping was great and the area isn’t too full of tourists quite yet.

June 30, 2014 – Regina, Saskatchewan
camping in buffalo pound saskatchewan
A long weekend road trip into Regina Saskatchewan started out with a water crossing in the Jeep I’d rather forget about, but it was still a great weekend away.

August 30, 2014 – Alberta Mud Buttes

I had no idea what a mud butte is, but I do now. This weekend #microadventure just involved me taking a variety of back roads to my final destination, but I choose to detour when I saw something interesting.

September 7, 2014 – Highway 11 to Edson foothills
alberta - nordegg and foothills to edson
Quiet back roads and beautiful scenery. Is there really much more to say?

September 14, 2014 – Baseline Mountain Trail
ponoka and rocky mountain house alberta
What started out to be a visit to Northridge Canada’s new location open house on the Saturday, turned into a beautiful over night camp out in Rocky Mountain House, followed by a great trail run on the Sunday.

October 13, 2014 – Waterton
waterton - canmore - banff - jasper - hwy 11
It was a cold night camping, but despite this one not being my most ‘favourite’ trip of the year, it was still interesting and I have a few new areas that I want to return to in 2015 to explore further.

I’m not much for New Years resolutions, but if I had to come up with one, it’s definitely to take my Jeep to more places in 2015!  Be certain you’ve subscribed to the blog (email form is just to the right near the top of the page) and you’ll receive an email update when I post a new update on the blog.
